Skin Care Tips for Women Over 60
Your skin may be radically different now that you’re in your 60s but that doesn’t mean you should adopt the same skincare routine that you used when you were in your 30s!
As the skin ages, it will generate less oil. Collagen production also slows down and all these will lead to dryer, saggy skin; wrinkles around the eyes; and laugh lines. In your 20s and 30s, the key to keeping the skin at its best is to exfoliate. Exfoliation helps reveal the softer, clearer skin underneath.
But when you’re in your 60s, the key is to hydrate. You want to build a skincare routine based on adding more moisture to the deeper layers of the skin to prevent deep lines, dryness, and sagginess. Below are tips on how to care for skin when you’re over 60. Wash Your Face Less Excessive face washing leads to moisture loss. You want to hold on to the oils your face produces so limit the frequency of face cleansing to twice per day. In the morning, don’t use a cleanser at all. When you cleanse your face in the evening, the face will remain clean in the morning. Using cleansers in the morning will only strip your skin of moisture. Instead, splash your face with water to refresh your skin. In the evening, we recommend using an oil-based face cleanser.
Use Sun Block It’s imperative that you protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays, especially when you’re over 60! If you have to stay out, load up on sunscreen with SPF not lower than 50 — the higher the SPF, the better. Also, don’t just apply once. Re-apply your sunscreen a couple of times, depending on how much time you will spend outdoors. Wear a hat to protect your face from the sun and sunnies to protect your eyes and the delicate skin around it from UVA and UVB rays.
Skin cancer is common in older people, particularly those that spend a lot of time outdoors. Too much sun will also result in age spots, blemishes, wrinkles, freckles, and skin dryness. Wear sunscreen even when it’s a cloudy day because UVA can penetrate through the atmosphere and affect facial skin. Use Face Oils or Oil-Based Moisturizers Most cream moisturizers are meant for younger skin and they only hydrate on a superficial level. Aging skin needs intensive hydration, something that common creams cannot give.
Instead of using creams or gels to hydrate aging skin, we recommend using oil-based moisturizers or face oils instead. Face oils and oil-based moisturizers lock in moisture deep into the skin so water does not escape. This helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles, prevent dryness, and keep the skin super smooth, plump and hydrated.
Exfoliate Exfoliation was your friend when you were in your 20s and it’s still a great method to keep the skin younger-looking and clear when you’re pushing 60. Sloughing off dead skin cells helps reveal the radiant skin underneath and helps hasten the skin’s cell renewal. The result? Clear, glowing skin with very little lines.
Just make sure you don’t overdo it. Use mild exfoliators and do not tug your skin. We recommend using face sponges or exfoliating creams with larger exfoliating beads. Exfoliate your skin twice or thrice per week and follow up every session with thick, oil-based moisturizer for best result.
