Amsterdam, Netherlands
Amsterdam is a stunning contrast of past and present, both tightly packed in a city small enough to explore in a few days. This is exactly why it’s on our list of top 10 European city break destinations. Reasons to visit Amsterdam: History, architecture, art, nightlife
Start with a walking tour of Amsterdam’s historic center. At its heart you will find The Dam Square, a historic site and home to several tourist spots. Among them are the Royal Palace, a neoclassical city hall built in 1665; and Nieuwe Kerk, a 15th century Gothic church. Modern attractions like The National Monument, Madame Tussaud’s Museum, and De Bijenkorf may be found here as well. By nightfall, you don’t have to go anywhere else for nightlife since there are bars and restaurants nearby.
De Wallen is just a short walk from The Dam. Oude Kerk, an 800-year old church and Amsterdam’s oldest building is located here. De Wallen is also an ideal place for experiencing nightlife as the city’s busiest Red Light District. Coffee shops within the area are known for serving legal marijuana to curious customers.
A trip to Amsterdam’s top museums makes your stay worthwhile. The Rijksmuseum has an outstanding Neo-Gothic exterior and showcases the best of Dutch art and artefacts from the Middle Ages up to the present. The Van Gogh Museum houses the largest collection of the 19th century artist. This museum is also home to works by Monet, Cézanne, and a few more of Van Gogh’s contemporaries. Before you leave, hop aboard a cruising tour of Amsterdam’s canals.
