Paris, France
Paris is a city of known for its bright lights, romance, and avante garde fashion. And yet there is so much more that the French capital can offer as a top European city break destination.
Reasons to visit Paris: History, architecture, art, music
The Eiffel Tower is perhaps the most iconic landmark of Paris. It was the world’s tallest man-made structure from 1889 to 1930. It’s still the tallest in the city, offering an excellent view from the top. Arc de Triomphe, an arch commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1806, is a fine example of Neoclassical architecture. Aside from a panoramic view of Paris, it has a museum that retraces related history.
If you wish to embark on a historic journey, start with the Notre Dame Cathedral, one of the oldest buildings in Paris. Completed in 1345, it has French Gothic architecture and stained glass windows. La Conciergerie has a similar Gothic style, albeit with a sinister past during the French Revolution. Try to make it to Château de Versailles before sunset so you can relax in the garden afterwards. The château combines French Baroque with contemporary architecture.
No trip to Paris is complete without visiting its museums and theatres. Musee de Louvre should be on top of your list. If large crowds turn you off, visit Musee d’Orsay instead to see artworks by famous French artists like Manet and Renoir. You don’t have to catch a performance at Palais Garnier to admire Chagall’s painted ceiling. Drop by Cite de la Musique to learn more about the musical history of Paris.
