Irvine, California

Irvine, California

Irvine is a fairly new city in Orange County, so you can’t expect it to be anything like the more developed cities of California such as Los Angeles and San Francisco. But that’s actually a good thing, since Irvine made it to our list of top 9 safest cities in the U.S.

Why it’s safe to live in Irvine: Irvine is one of the largest cities in Orange County with a population of over 240,000. For a city this big, you’ll be surprised to find that it has significantly low crime rates. In fact, Irvine has the least violent crimes compared to other large cities in the U.S. – a title that it has proudly held for 11 years in a row. Only 120 violent crimes were reported in 2014, and very few are related to property. That means you have little to worry about leaving your home to have some fun, or the car you parked on the street.

So why are Irvine residents safer than most Americans? For starters, the city has one of the highest officer-to-population ratio among large U.S. cities. Furthermore, the folks at Irvine are an educated bunch – more than 60 percent of its population hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. And there’s never a shortage of jobs in a city where there are more vacancies than residents.
