Rome, Italy

It earned the title “Eternal City” for a good reason. Rome is the abode of ancient landmarks about a millenium old. Historic heritage is what makes it one of top city break destinations in Europe. Well that and the fact that it is the seat of Vatican.

Walk around St. Peter’s Square for a crash course on Roman history. It serves as a gateway to The Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, Michaelangelo’s iconic frescoes, and of course, St. Peter’s Basilica. If you thought that was overwhelming, wait until you get to the other side of the river where Old Rome awaits. Before you go see the ancient landmarks that have made a name for Rome, take the rest of the day off exploring the piazzes. The plazas of Rome are famous for their ornate fountains, often decorated with detailed sculptures.

Ancient Rome is well and alive in the Colosseo district. Good thing they offer a ticket that grants you two days access to three of its most visited sites: The Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hall. It’s best that you start with the Colosseum to avoid longer lines. Built in 70 AD, it’s been around for more than 1,900 years. Admittedly, this proud landmark has lost much of its glory, but it’s a spectacular sight nonetheless. Your next stop should be Palatine Hill where wealthy Roman families once lived. Now all that’s left are ruins of their extravagant villas. Next to these worn-down villas is the Roman Forum and its ruined temples and arches.

Before you leave Colosseo to see the rest that Rome has to offer, visit the Capitoline Museums where archaeological finds from ancient Greece and Rome are on permanent display.
